Kira and Elise know how I sometimes struggle to ensure that blog entries go up in a timely manner. Sometimes they come rapid-fire, sometimes we have a slow month. So they decided to help out by creating a little Three Groves Quiz. Open the Powerpoint, run the presentation, and you can take the quiz. (Sigh.) It has now been publicly demonstrated that my children (ages 8.5 and 11) know more about Powerpoint than I do.

Poem: Look and Remember by Kira

(My little poet has been at it again. Kira is 10, and this poem just placed third in the Rehoboth Beach Writers Guild's Annual Young Writers Contest. We're very proud.)

 

I sat upon a little hill,

Alone with the sky and the sea,

And dwelled upon my curious thoughts,

That seemed some memory.

 

So I just sat and listened,

To the tulips swing and sway,

And Little Robin Redbreast,

Call unto the day.

 

And I watched the pearly dewdrops,

I saw ripples in the pond,

I squinted over the horizon,

Into lands beyond.

 

Then I did remember,

A thought of purest gem,

Nature needs you, you, and you,

As much as you need them.

Kingdom of Morning

The grass is green and juicy

And does sparkle with wet dew,

They’re scepters by the dozen
By three, by four, by two.

The palace is the play set
All shiny with night rain,
Its wooden boards are now smooth stone
With no more beauty to gain.

Our swings are quick, white horses
Their coats are warm and moist,
They’re young and handsome, smart and fast
Their perfection can’t be voiced.

The palace is kept spotless
I treat everyone with care,
So when I go about business
The birds trumpet a lovely fanfare.

Gold sun has just now risen
And lit two grassy lawns,
Good-bye, my kingdom, see you later,
When tomorrow dawns.

Nature, Nature

LONDON GROVE--A mysterious poem about nature has been unearthed. Read it for yourself:

Hidden beneath the wiry grass,
Soaked in sunlight, golden brass,
Tunnels down to mystic mirth,
Tunnels down to Mother Earth.

Cherry blossoms pay a visit,
She says, ‘How lovely, how exquisite!’
To apple bud’s facial looks,
‘You can’t find that smooth face in books!’

She can cure creature depressions
By sympathy and kind expressions,
With the help of walnut pills
For colds and wounds and constant chills.

But tell me something, if you may,
Who, of all people, who will pay?
For every service has a price
Whether it is harsh or nice.

Yes, my people it is true,
All of us including YOU!!!

A Kid’s Perspective--special edition!!!

ECOVILLAGE PROSPERING!!!

LONDON GROVE—A new group has captured the attention of many eco-concerned Americans. Concord Ecovillage, aka Three Groves, has found at last a promising piece of land priced (at what they think) is affordable. They want to build the houses in a cluster so they can go visit their friends without a car. “We’re all very excited, I’m sure,” says Kira Pelletier, age 9. “There’s no reason not to be.” Pelletier is going to be one of the oldest children in Three Groves. “Southern Chester County has got to have an Ecovillage someday. Perhaps this is the time, and it should have a tree house.”

“A big, strong tree house with lots of big, strong branches for lots of big, heavy tire swings,” said young Pelletier, “and there should be a fort and a big scary rope ladder. There will be lots of grown-ups to help the smaller ones and to admire me climb up and down all by myself. That’s what I want in the Ecovillage.”

There will be a small clubhouse near the dwellings where all the people of the Ecovillage can meet. “We will have dinner and dessert,” Pelletier informs. “No meal is complete without dessert. Surely you know that.”

There will be a room for kids in the clubhouse. “It will have stuffed animals, toy vehicles, balls, fake cell phones, crayons, paper, and a big Sony T.V.  All for us with lots of movies for the T.V.,” Pelletier states. We don’t know about that, but we know Pelletier and all her younger friends are anxious to adapt to their second life.

P.S. So are the adults!!!

The Children's Press Begins

My daughter Kira (age 9) is very enthusiastic about the idea of building an ecovillage. When I said that we needed money, she offered her allowance. When I told her that we get to design our community, she declared that it needed treehouses. When I suggested that she write an essay about why she wants to live in an ecovillage, she decided that she would be a newspaper reporter and promptly interviewed herself. Then she decided that she would organized all of the children in the community  as news correspondents. This could take some time since most of them are only beginning to learn to write.

So here begins the Children's Press. We'll see where Kira leads us.
